JUST AS FEW BOOKS CONTAIN ALL POSSIBLE WORDS, FEW IMAGES CONTAIN ALL 16,777,216 COLORS POSSIBLE WITH 24 BITS.

FOR IMAGES WITH RELATIVELY FEW COLORS (<257), WE CAN:

  • MAKE A LIST OF THE 24-BIT COLORS THAT DO OCCUR (CALLED THE PALETTE).

  • USE ONE 8-BIT NUMBER FOR EACH PIXEL THAT SPECIFIES THE POSITION OF THE PIXEL'S COLOR IN THE LIST OF 24-BIT COLORS.
