THE CAESAR CIPHER CAN BE GENERALIZED TO PRODUCE THE FAMILY OF "SHIFT CIPHER"s WHERE THE KEY IS THE NUMBER OF POSITIONS EACH LETTER IN A MESSAGE SHOULD BE SHIFTED WITHIN THE ALPHABET.

  • IT IS TRADITIONAL TO SPECIFY THE KEY USING A LETTER WHERE "A" INDICATES A SHIFT OF 1, "B" A SHIFT OF 2, "C" A SHIFT OF 3 (THE "CAESAR" SHIFT), ETC.
