The lab Macs are set up to use the Camera, as described in
the handout. However, you'll need to change your preferences to use
Java 1.5 instead of Java 1.6. The newer version does not support
cameras. To make this change:
Log in to your account as usual.
Open a Finder window and click on "Applications" on the
left-hand side.
Open the "Utilities" folder inside the "Applications" folder.
Double click on "Java Preferences".
The bottom half of the window that appears contains
several version of Java. Press the mouse on the item that says
"Java 1.5" and "64 bit", and drag it to the top of the list.
Quit the Java Preferences and then open BlueJ.
You should now be able to create and use cameras in your programs.
Mileage may vary on your own computers. If you follow those
steps on a Mac and do not find Java 1.5 in the list, you can try to
install Java 1.5
(see directions
here. If those don't work, you can also try the
approach here.
Thanks to Sean H. for the pointer to that one.)
Using the camera isn't required, so you can simply use the provided
images (or your own) for the assignment if you can't get it to work..
