I remember you saying something in class about how I could put Adobe Photoshop on my own computer...

Would you repeat that?

What I probably told people they could do was connect to the "Public" volume on our Cider Press server and look in the "Launchables" folder on that volume. Within Launchables there is an alias which will open the PhotoShop 5.0 folder if you click on it. Then, try copying the contents of that folder onto a new folder on your disk and see if it works.

Be warned:
It will require lots of disk space and plenty of memory.

I don't know if anyone else has done this or what problems they have had if they tried.

Let me know if you have problems.

It doesn't work- I get error messages saying
something about Photoshop being a keyed
application, and I don't have the key.

I guess I'll just have to walk _all_ the way to
the basement of Bronfman... *sigh*.

For legal reasons, most of the software purchased by the computer center for use on the campus is "Keyserved". This means that it has been modified so that when you try to use it the first thing it does is send some messages to the computer center asking if it is alright for you to use it. The main purpose of this is to make sure that the total number of copies of a given program in use throughout the campus at any time is no more than the number of copies the computer center paid for.

To make all this work, you have to install something called "KeyAccess" in your system folder. You can find it under "Macintosh Applications" on the "Helen" file server in the Williams zone. After you put it in the system's folder, I think you have to go to the chooser, select "Keyaccess" and give it a moment to find the machine it will need to in the computer center.

Obviously, I haven't had to do this for a while so I've been a bit vague on details. Again, let me know if (where) you get stuck.
