The College has an impressive collection of computing facilities,
including Apple Macintosh computers, PC-compatible microcomputers, and
Unix workstations from Sun, Dell, HP and Silicon Graphics.
College systems can be found in several places on campus, with the
largest publicly available clusters at the Center for Computing in
Jesup Hall and in the Sawyer Library.
The Computer Science Department itself has a network of Pentium
III-based UNIX Dell PCs, Sun servers and workstations, and Power
Macintosh G4 computers available in a number of labs:
- Unix lab:
The department's network of Unix workstations is located in the
computer science student laboratory in the Thompson Computing
Laboratory. The machines in this lab run variants of the Unix
operating system, and consist of Pentium-based Dell systems
running FreeBSD. These systems are reserved for students
in computer science courses, and provide a very powerful working
environment.
- Mac Lab:
Our laboratory of Power
Macintosh G4 computers, which are used by students taking
introductory computer science courses, is also located in the Thompson
Computing Laboratory. The state-of-the-art equipment in these
laboratories provide students with an excellent opportunity to use
some of the most powerful tools available today to computer
scientists, and bring projects within the reach of our undergraduates
that would have been unthinkable in a more primitive environment.
- The "Back Lab":
We also have a reconfigurable lab space for use by various
courses involving lab work. ranging from digital design to computer
architecture to robotics.
- Bullpen cluster:
A cluster of Sun Enterprise servers
is part of the department's Unix lab, and
is available for high performance parallel and distributed computing.
It includes 21 SPARC processors, over 12 gigabytes of main memory, 600
gigabytes of disk, and gigabit networking.
- Dhanni cluster:
The department also has the Dhanni cluster,
which is used to
support research and education within the department.
The cluster consists of 8 Dell PowerEdge 1425 computers, each with two
dual core 2.8 GHz Intel Xeon processors and 1 GB of memory. These
computers are running Debian Linux 3.1, with a 2.4 kernel.
